The Herndon High School junior varsity cross-country underclassmen boys won the individual and team races at the Great Meadows Invitational on Saturday. Freshman Troy Hunsaker broke the tape with a time of 17:52.41, closely followed by sophomore Devon Miller, who finished in fourth place. In addition, freshman Jose Patino finished 16th, and sophomores Mikey Aukamp and Marshall Findley finished 32nd and 35th, respectively, and there were a total of 386 runners in the race.
The Hornets also won the Varsity B races at the event. Herndon coach Pete Sherry elected not to participate in Varsity A classification, and this decision created a more solid team for the B races and allowed more runners to participate in the JV-level races. For the boys Varsity B races, junior Jack Jasper finished second after staying in the lead pack for more than the first two miles. Jasper's finishing time was 16:19.86. Also scoring for the Hornet boys were junior Alex Anthony (14th), sophomores Jimmy Luehrs (22nd) and David Kloosterboer (24th), and senior Sean Deford (25th).
For the girls, sophomore Carolyn Hennessey finished fifth with a time of 19:57.75. Also scoring for the girls were freshman Belle Burgess (15th), sophomore Carly Kulik (19th), and seniors Mehnaz Haq (25th) and Sarah Skinner (53rd).
Both Herndon JV girls teams finished in seventh place and in the JV upperclassmen boys race, Herndon finished in ninth. In the JV underclassmen girls race, only freshmen ran for Herndon and three of these girls finished in the top 20—Ashley Grupenhoff (12th), Anne Pursifull (17th) and Emma Miller (19th)—with 282 freshmen and sophomores running in the race.
