Conspicuous by its absence from Del. Ken Plum's guest commentary on Dulles Rail ("Major Move Forward for Dulles Rail," The Observer, May 9) is the total lack of any mention of the potential costs of this venture to the taxpayer.
Del. Plum quotes the Federal Transportation Administration to the effect that the project has met "federal standards for cost efficiency." Laugh! I nearly fell off my sofa. Tell us the one about the streamlined federal budget process, Ken. There was, Del. Plum says, talk of the need to "adhere to project schedule and costs" otherwise the project would be abandoned?
Rail to Dulles may well be a "blessing" for us all, but the absence of any mention of the possible overall amount of public funding involved is cautionary.
