Thanks to HHS for Music Performance

To the editor:

June 19, at Herndon High School, our community was treated to a wonderful evening of cultural and musical delights. More than 150 students from the Saitama Sakae High School Wind Orchestra took the audience on a spectacular musical journey.

Music from J.P. Sousa, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, a tribute to trumpeter Harry James, and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, highlighted the program. Retired Herndon orchestra director Richard Bergman conducted a “Fantasy on a Japanese Folksong.” Two days previously the students performed at New York City’s Carnegie Hall.

It is easy to understand why this enthusiastic and very professional-sounding group of students has won 15 Gold prizes in Japanese band competitions.  They sang and danced, and one of their two encores included a very moving rendition of “America, the Beautiful.”

Standing ovations were proof that their music was an overwhelming hit with the appreciative audience. Thanks, Herndon High, for inviting these talented musicians to our town.
